Narrative

Merthyr Telegraph 8 May 1869

A TRAVELLER ATTACKED WITH TOOTHACHE. — Thomas Williams, of the George Inn, Cefn-coed-y-cymmer, was charged with having his house open for the sale of spirits, at 4.40 p.m. on Sunday, the 23rd of February last. The defendant's wife appeared with the witnesses for the defence at the last petty sessions, but the Bench then declined to hear the case in the defendant's absence. P.C. Bounds stated that on the day and at the time above mentioned he visited defendant's house, and saw three persons there each with a glass of whiskey. Called the attention of the landlady to the time, and said he must report the house.— Defendant called William Sainsbury, who said that he lived at Merthyr. Had been walking about for hours, and wanted refreshment. Considered they ought to have it, as they were two miles from home. (Defendant here said that it was two miles and a quarter ) One of the party had toothache, but the man of the toothache was not now present.—Thomas D. Davies said: I was one of the party. I am a brewer at Merthyr. I suggested whiskey as a remedy for the toothache. We had some difficulty in getting Mrs. Williams to serve us. She said it was "stop tap". All of us had not the toothache, but we all drank whiskey.—In answer to a question by the Bench, witness said, "I serve the defendant with beer somtimes." The bench said that a glass of beer and some bread and cheese would be more like refreshment, even had they been travellers, of which there was no reasonable pretence. Defendant was fined 2s, 6d. and 12s. 6d. costs, and warned that the Cefn public-houses would not be allowed to be kept open for persons from Merthyr to resort to during the prohibited hours of Sunday.—Fine and costs paid.
